Gilberto Munoz

Gilberto is the principal of Swansea Elementary in the Denver Public Schools where he supports the learning and empowerment of 520 students, 250 families and nearly 40 teachers.
Gilberto grew up in a housing project in the border city of El Paso and was the first in his family to graduate from high school and college. These experiences have shaped the values for his work in education, guiding him to focus on increasing access to educational opportunities for underprivileged and disenfranchised communities. Gilberto’s skill in engaging community and building trust has been instrumental in stabilizing a school on the margins and securing resources.
Gilberto earned his bachelor’s in anthropology with a minor in Ethnic Studies from the newly formed Ethnic Studies Department he helped found at the University of Colorado at Boulder and a master’s in curriculum and instruction from the University of Colorado at Denver.
